Michigan is in the middle of a growing housing crisis. There simply aren’t enough homes in Michigan.
The housing shortage impacts all of us. It impacts affordability and restricts options for anyone looking to buy a home. Michigan’s Housing Readiness legislation updates our laws to balance local decision-making with the need for communities to accommodate a range of housing choices that reflect Michigan’s needs.
Michigan lawmakers have a package of bi-partisan bills that address the major causes of our housing crisis – regulation and red-tape. These bills are aimed at providing more attainable housing for Michigan families without the extra burdens of government spending or new programs.

Urge lawmakers to support the Michigan Housing Readiness legislation. The package includes the following reforms:
- Smarter Parking: Caps the mandatory parking spots at one per unit.
- Duplexes by Right: Permits these units by right in single-family residential zones and clarifies the statewide definition of duplex.
- ADUs: Allows Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) by right-on single-family home parcels, expanding options for seniors, students, and families.
- Reasonable Unit Size: Caps the minimum size requirements on dwellings to 500 square feet in metro areas making it easier to build smaller, more affordable apartments.
- Lot Size Limits: Caps lot sizes for single family homes preventing excessive land mandates that drive up housing costs.
- Development Study Requirements: Creates fair standards for local governments to request studies during development reviews.
- Setback Requirements: This helps us use land more efficiently, while still allowing exceptions for sensitive areas like marshes or waterways
Local Government’s Solution to our Housing Crisis:
- Hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer money for changes they can make without new government programs.
- Incentives that don’t change local policies make certain types of housing illegal.
- Support the same NIMBY voices that have driven up housing costs and rent.
Take action today and urge lawmakers to support the Michigan Housing Readiness legislation!
