Local Builders Warn Residents of Scam Contractors Following Storm
As Kalamazoo/Portage, MI, and surrounding areas begin the recovery after the devastating effects of tornados, local home builders are warning residents about the risk of scammers posing as legitimate contractors. HBA of Western Michigan encourages all residents to thoroughly research contractors to avoid falling victim to paying for substandard home repairs or potential scams.
“Unfortunately, unscrupulous contractors show up after storms, and try to take advantage of homeowners to get them to pay for below-average work or worse, they may not ever show up,” Aaron Hovestadt, CEO HBAWMI “Before you hire a contractor, please make sure to do your homework.”
HBA of Western Michigan recommends that homeowners research potential contractors:
- Verify if the firm has a permanent business address and a good reputation.
- Insist on a complete and clearly written contract detailing all aspects of the project.
- DO ask for references and DO NOT pay cash upfront.
- Call the HBA of Western Michigan for a list of reliable and vetted contractors.
