Remembering the Legacy of Two Great Leaders

Members HBA News

With last year being our 75th anniversary as an HBA, we have spent a lot of time reflecting on the leaders who have shaped our association into what it is today. Our past presidents have stepped up and used their time and talents to advocate on behalf of the building industry, showing dedication even during the toughest economic years. In 2024, Ken Staples and Greg Powell, two HBAM past presidents who exemplified these strengths, sadly passed away.

These men were visionaries  in both the building industry and their communities. Greg Powell, known as Southwest Michigan’s first NAHB Certified Green Builder, took the lead in sustainable home building through his company, Powell Construction Services. He was an active member, serving as president to both the HBA of Southeast MI and HBAM, and on the NAHB Board of Directors. Greg’s devotion to the industry called him to additional volunteer work as the governor appointee to the Residential Builders and Maintenance and Alteration Contractors Board.

Ken Staples pursued a career as a custom home builder and remodeler in Ann Arbor. Leading his local HBA as president eventually led him to the HBAM presidency where he championed initiatives to strengthen the industry statewide. Realizing the importance of giving back to his community, Ken founded The Festive Affair, an annual charity event supporting The Salvation Army Staples Family Center. Now the Salvation Army Ken and Marianna Staples Veterans’ Hope House, this emergency homeless shelter provides invaluable support to veterans and families in need.

Both Ken and Greg demonstrated their unwavering commitment to the betterment of our industry, embodying a legacy of selflessness and dedication. Their contributions to our association and their communities will be felt for years to come and will remind us of the power of service and the lasting impact of strong leadership.
